Xi meets Macron on maintaining sound China-France ties

by weimiaow on / 阿拉爱上海

NICE, France – Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday stressed the importance of maintaining a sound China

-France relationship to both countries’ long-term development and its potential impact on the world.

Xi, who is paying a state visit to France, made the remarks when meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in the southern French city of Nice.

Recalling the history of friendly exchanges between China and France, Xi noted that Franc

e is the first major Western country to establish official diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

France, he added, also is the first country to form a strategic partnership and conduct stra

tegic dialogue with China and the first to carry out civilian nuclear-energy cooperation with China.

He pointed to the special significance of his visit, which came at a special year that marks both the 70th anniversary of the foun

ding of the PRC and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of China-France diplomatic relations.

The US has been using one pretext or the other to provoke Beijing and violate the 1979 Joint Commun

by weimiaow on / 爱上海

While spectators at the sold-out 60,000-seat Guangxi Sports Center loudly vented their anger a

s the home squad left the pitch, within minutes hundreds of millions of netizens expressed their dis

By Friday morning, related topics had been viewed more than 10

Thursday’s defeat-the first test of newly appointed coach

by weimiaow on / 娱乐地图

Fabio Cannavaro who is also helming CSL side Guangzhou Evergrande-was harder to swallow becau

se Team China had defeated Thailand in the round of 16 at the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates in January.

The 45-year-old Cannavaro, who took over from compatriot Marcello Lippi last week, ha

s made headlines and triggered controversy because of the dual club-and-country role.

“China now has the financial power to bring the best coach to manag

e its team, but that cannot bring any improvement overnight,” Cannavaro said after the loss.

“You need to set up a sustainable system in order to develop soccer over the long term.

“China cannot improve with only good tactics. I found that problem

during this year’s Asian Cup. And what I saw tonight confirmed my judgment.”

China should be good partners with inclusive interests and pursue common development. Xi called on the two count

ries to boost mutual political trust, enhance communication of policies and support each other’s major concerns and core interests.

China appreciates Italy’s contributions to promoting relations between China and Europe, Xi said, adding that China would like to enhance cooperation with Italy under

multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations and the G20, to support multilateralism and free trade.

Saying that the world is facing unprecedented challenges, Xi added that China w

ould like to make joint efforts with the international community to build a more beautiful world.

This year is the 15th anniversary of the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partners

hip, and next year will be the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

Mattarella said that Italy supports the Belt and Road Initiati

that was put forward by Xi, and the initiative is expected to promote the interconnectivity of the Eurasian continent.

The BRI is also a road of cultural exchanges, he said, adding that Italy would like to enhance cooperation with China in tourism and culture. Italy ad

mires China’s achievements in economic development, and it appreciates China’s opening-up policies, he said.

Both Italy and China are ancient civilizations, and the people of the two countries have sufficient wisdom to deal with

challenges nowadays, he said, adding that China’s rejuvenation will bring new contributions to peace and prosperity.

China will take a solid step toward becoming a high-income country this year,

reating more space to deepen reform and expand opening-up, economists said on Friday.

A more balanced growth pattern will help the world’s second-largest ec

onomy pass the “middle-income trap”, with consumption and high-tech man

ufacturing leading growth, they said at a Beijing seminar leading up to the 2019 China Development Forum, which starts on Saturday.

The 10 percent deduction rate, which applies to buyers of ag

ricultural goods, will be cut to 9 percent, said the statement.

“The VAT reform is not simply lowering the tax rate, but focusing on the integration with the overall tax reform. It has continued to ma

ke progress toward the long-term goal of establishing a modern VAT system, and it also leaves room for cutting the number of VAT brac

kets from three to two in the future,” said Wang Jianfan, director of the department of taxation under the Ministry of Finance.

To implement the statutory taxation principle, China will also accelerate legislation to deepen VAT reform, Wang said.

The joint statement came after Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday that China will imp

lement a series of measures to cut VAT rates and ease the tax burden in almost all industries.

Earlier this month, Li said in his 2019 Government Work Repo

rt that VAT reform was key to improving the tax system and achieving better income distribution.

hina military threat’ is a fallacy: Ministry of National Defense

by weimiaow on / 上海千花网

The Chinese military strongly opposes playing up the fallacy of the so-called “China’s militar

y threat” by some US military officials, as such a zero-sum game and Cold War mentality is not cond

ucive to the sound development of bilateral military relations, a Chinese spokesman said on Friday.

“China has followed a path of peaceful development and has firmly implemente

d a national defense policy which is defensive in nature,” said Wu Qian, spokesman of the Ministry of Na

tional Defense, adding that a growing Chinese military will better help maintain world peace.

He said the Chinese side has noticed that defense authorities in the United States often do som

e “selfish calculations” for more in the military budget by hyping threats from other countries.

“Such practice is short-sighted, and very dangerous,” he said. “We urge the US side to give up the Col

d War mentality and look at China’s development of national defense and military in a rational way.”

And if parliament *actually* says what it wantsad to ask, didn’t yo

by weimiaow on / 阿拉爱上海

It’s very likely that any consensus that could be reached across the Commons would be a softer Brexit than the one May is currently pursuing.

That, I am afraid, is still a fairly open-ended answer. It might mean the need to renegotiate, which would mean a longer exten

sion, which would mean being in the EU elections, which could mean a second referendum, ultimately.

The key point here is that cross-party consensus might soun

d nice, but on an issue as divisive as Brexit, it’s as likely as anything to blow up both main parties.

While things are far from rosy and three weeks is not enough t

ime to sort much, it’s worth noting that while Brexit might not be going terribly well, the last thr

ee years have been a huge learning curve for the entire UK. We know more now than we did.

So while the next bit of the Brexit process might look crunchy, the decisions made in the coming days will not be made lightly.
